As the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR, Ambassador Jung Woo Sung participated in the Forum “For Peace and Prosperity” held in Jeju Island on June 26, 2018 to share issues about Victims, Help the community raise awareness about Victims.

At the forum, Ambassador shared about many of the difficulties that Refugees around the world have been facing for decades…..but our society doesn’t seem to be used to phrase “refugees” and also seem unable to open our hearts to see their difficulties, their feelings about “drifting” life.

Today, as the Founder of our JWSA Foundation, he once again shared his heart deeply and powerfully…..The words and experiences that we all need to contemplate….

Ambassador Jung Woo Sung said:

“Do we really need to experience the life of a refugee to feel better…? I hope all of you will open your heart, open your heart even more…..Let’s try once to put ourselves in the situation of an “expatriate” person…..we are having a peaceful and happy life with our family and loved ones, but suddenly one day, we have to experience the loss of our family…facing to the lost our loved ones….like our historic fire in Korea….. You are having warm meals with your family, with warm lamps at night….with the wife’s caring hands….with the laughter of a child…..but one day….if you lost this connection….cut off the invisible string of loving relationship with each other…..what would you feel….? what would you like to say to us…..to the people who are fighting to protect human rights, to protect basic rights, the right to be human of people whose calling “homeland” is also can’t call into names…..people whose pain and loss is probably much greater than the “homeless” people…..

No matter we are standing at the bottom of society…No matter how much we are living in poverty…we still have a big roof to shelter ourselves in…..It’s our homeland…..But as for refugees, they don’t have such a common roof….So the only common roof they can rely on is “the world” which is “humanity”…..which is love, sharing….is the open arms of all of us…. I personally feel the need to be responsible for such lives.

Our world is “expanding” day by day and is  “increasingly being leveled, flattened”…but “expansion” is not mutual invasion, “expansion” does not mean “we are exerting our strengths intimidate the weaker” but we need to “expand our love to cover, protect each other, embrace each other in times of need” We need to “expand compassion to understand pain of people around”….to be willing to help those who are less fortunate than us….

“Flattening” does not mean “assimilating” all things and values in this life as the same; because each person’s efforts and contributions values to the community and society are quite different. But “flattening” for our concept is also back to the definition of “open vision”, specifically “Internet” is one of the great inventions of mankind, have been helping our world to be increasingly “closer together”, regardless of all distances in space, time, language, ethnicity or religion. It is technology that has erased and flattened these obstacles to help humanity connect, learn, cooperate more easily…and of course also let us share difficulties, happiness and sad feelings with each other in a “true”, “quick” and “timely” way.

Our world has experienced numerous pandemics from the Antonine Plague (165), the Cyprian Plague (250), the “Black Death” (1350), Smallpox (1492), Russian flu (1889), Influenza pandemic (1918)….to the nearest pandemic and can also be considered the most painful up to the present time is the COVIDS 19 pandemic…..a silent war which has been more painful than ever. In difficulties, we can feel happiness more clearly…..in the “end of suffering” we understand how precious a hand holding is…..right now…..in the dark area, standing in the middle of the “line” of life and death, we are startled to spend time thinking about the past…..sometimes it can be tears of happiness because we have lived unashamedly with the life of a human being… but sometimes it can also be “late tears” because of the feelings of regret for there are so many things that have not been done in our lives…

The COVIDS pandemic is a pain but also precious moments to help us all look back at things together, join hands to maintain peace and embrace each other more….

I always try to contribute what I can in my ability to join hands with all of you to build a more peaceful, developed and prosperous world.”
